We hung Heron 02 on the Tamarack line in March, expecting to bring it home in May. It stayed until September.
The ice storm
On the night of 2 February, ice built on the north conductor at 4.1 kg per metre. Heron measured it span by span, and the utility moved load onto the line overnight to melt it off before it could gallop.
What we changed
Heaters on the drive units, a stiffer pressure wheel and a new rule: in freezing rain, park at the tower and wait.
